In 1996, Julie auditioned for the role of Buffy in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), but lost out to Sarah Michelle. However, she was offered a small role as a vampire girl in the unaired pilot in which she did such a good job that her part was expanded to a few more episodes in playing the vampire Darla. With that, her career had finally taken off. She guest starred in more TV shows like The Big Easy and Fame L.A. whilst getting a small, but memorable, role playing a receptionist in the movie As Good as It Gets (1997).

It has been speculated that Rachel Stevens would make appearances on several reality shows. It was reported that she would enter the Celebrity Big Brother house when her ex Jeremy Edwards was in the house, and again in the 2007 version of the series. In the latter instance it was her fellow band mate Jo O'Meara who entered. Rachel Stevens name was also mentioned for the 2006 series of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, but she was not one of the celebrities to enter the jungle that year. Rachel Stevens and "S Club 7" quickly rose to fame, with their debut single "Bring It All Back" reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in June 1999. The groups follow-up, "S Club Party" was also a hit, the groups self-titled debut album also sold well. The success of their debut album landed the S Club their own TV show, S Club 7 in Miami.
